Everything you need to know about To Tip Tapp
General Questions
ToTipTapp is a mobile app that makes accepting cashless tips and donations simple and frictionless. Built for buskers, artists, non-profits, and service workers, it uses Square's trusted payment technology to let your audience support you with just a tap of their card or phone.
The app is perfect for street performers, musicians, artists, charity workers, non-profits, and service professionals who want to accept cashless payments on the spot without complicated setups.
You need an Android device with NFC capability or a Square card reader, and a free Square account. That's it!
Setup & Account Security
Setup is quick and easy:
- Download ToTipTapp from the Google Play Store
- Create or log into your Square account (this happens in your browser, not in the app)
- Authorize ToTipTapp to connect to your Square account
- Start accepting tips!
Absolutely. ToTipTapp never sees or stores your bank account details. The app only connects to your Square account through a secure authorization process. When you set up the app, you log in through Square's website (not the app), so ToTipTapp never sees your Square credentials. All payment processing and money transfers are handled entirely by Square's secure infrastructure.
When you first connect ToTipTapp to your Square account, Square asks for your permission to allow the app to take in-person payments and collect the developer fee. If you approve, Square gives the app a temporary "secret token" that lets it communicate securely with Square. This token is only valid while you're logged in and changes each time you log in. You can manage or revoke app access anytime from your Square account portal.
Payments & Fees
Square charges 1.6% per transaction in Australia for in-person card payments (rates vary by country - US is 2.6% + 15ยข, UK is 2.2%). ToTipTapp adds a 1% developer fee to support ongoing app development. For example, on a $10 tip: Square takes $0.16, the developer gets $0.10, and you receive $9.74 in your bank account.
Yes, you can create QR codes through Square, but there are important differences. QR code payments are processed as online transactions with higher fees (2.2% in Australia vs 1.6% for in-person). More importantly, the user experience is much more complicated - people have to scan the code, type in the amount, enter their card details, verify the website is legitimate, etc. With ToTipTapp, it's just one touch on the screen and one tap of their card - faster and easier than digging for cash.
When someone taps their card (or phone) on the Square reader, it securely collects the card information and sends it to the app. ToTipTapp then requests Square to process the payment to your account. Square handles the entire transaction - the app simply facilitates the request and displays the result (success or failure) to the donor.
Not necessarily! If your Android phone has NFC capability, you can use tap-to-pay without any additional hardware. However, a Square reader provides a dedicated device and can be more convenient for busking or events. Square readers are affordable (around $40 AUD) and often available on promotion.
User Experience
Nothing beats cash, but ToTipTapp gives your cashless audience an easy way to show appreciation for your art. Many people don't carry cash anymore, so you could be missing out on tips. The app makes accepting cards as quick and frictionless as possible - sometimes even faster than finding change in a purse!
The tipper simply chooses an amount on your screen and taps their card or phone on the reader. Within seconds, they see a green checkmark for success or a red cross if something went wrong. It's completely self-service and doesn't require you to operate anything while you're performing.
Yes! The app was developed by a software developer for his son who busks regularly. Since getting the Square reader, they've seen card tips consistently overtake cash tips. Last week was the first time card tips exceeded cash, showing that people really do prefer the convenience.
Technical Details
The Square reader collects card information and sends it securely to the app. The app then sends a payment request to Square along with the authorization token. Square processes the entire transaction on their end - charging the credit card company, taking their fee, paying the developer fee, and depositing the remainder into your nominated bank account. The app itself never handles sensitive payment data.
Yes! You can view and manage all connected apps from your Square account portal. You can revoke ToTipTapp's access at any time if you choose to stop using it.
